There are two different definitions for the word "root canal." It alludes to the actual tooth passages between the pulp and the tooth roots that are home to nerves and blood vessels. Your tooth was preserved, but since the pulp, nerves, and blood vessels were taken out, it is no longer a living tooth. A dead molar becomes brittle and more prone to breaking.
